Dating in the 1950's: The Do's and Don'ts

Teenagers looking for love in the 50’s was common, compared to now where travelling and experiencing the world is more of a priority. Traditions made way in the 50’s and finding a partner you would marry was the norm; following several courtship rules.

It was unheard of for a woman to ask a man out on a date and with a lack of communication, notice of at least 2-3 days must have been given to the woman before the date.

Hey, Good Looking!

One thing that hasn’t changed is appearances. If you say looks don’t matter – you’re lying. Being well dressed and groomed was as much of a thing in the 50’s as it is now. Although, instead of a suit, I’m sure an ironed t-shirt and (not too) skinny jeans suffice.

Dads Permission
Men would meet their dates at their house in order for her family to approve him worthy of their daughter and order a time in which she must return. Whereas nowadays, most boys tell their parents they’re going out with the lads simultaneously sending a “Get you outside Nandos?” text to ‘Bae’.

Up the Dancin’
Dating back then could be more than just a few drinks at a bar. In fact, drinking on a first date was very uncommon. Dates mostly entailed going ballroom dancing and to the pictures.

“Who pays?” was non-negotiable. It was fundamental that the male pay. Although this rule is still fairly present in modern dating, women are more inclined to offer. Doing this in the 50’s, however, was deemed highly emasculating. So ladies, why not let him feel superior if it gets you a free butterfly chicken.

Today, this courtship advice might seem archaic to those who can order up a date with a simple swipe of an iPhone. However, these 1950s courtship rules did encourage good manners, generosity and mindfulness- qualities that we could probably use a bit more of in our modern dating lives.

To get a better insight into what dating then was really like, I asked my Gran some questions:
