Dating Today: Has it changed for better or for worse?

Today, dating differs immensely from even the 80's where the internet was only just taking off. Fashion continued to change as did the music, however, social media was no where to be seen. Let's look at the way we date today:

Did You See That Snapchat Story?

Social media has invented a whole new world of dating. The power of Facebook a.k.a the detectives handbook: where personal information - of that guy your friend thought was hot at the party last night - can be scooped up in seconds thanks to Zuckerberg. Although, is it even legit?

Effects of Social Media

Generation Y are narcissists - a majority, anyway. We exaggerate self-perceptions of ourselves, carefully crafting what we want people to believe and literally hiding from our timeline what we want unseen.

What's worse? A first date isn't really a first date at all. We are already exposed to their hobbies, lifestyle and even what they
did last night through social media.

Social media has also created a whole new vocabulary list: snap-streak, super-like, double-tap, the list goes on...

Where To Meet Someone

I don't actually know the answer to this - apart from bars and clubs. Courting has evolved from meeting a man at the weekly dancing to seeing that guy in a bar you've already 'matched' with on tinder.

Money, Money, Money

To go on an actual date that isn't at someones house means having money in the bank account (not me lol). Dates these days aren't cheap, especially when the common choice is dinner or (several) drinks.

Express your Emojis

Social Media has in turn made a lot of us anti-social. Not only do we spend more time on our phones while in company (rude), we prefer to express our feelings online rather than to friends and family.
Our generation is provided with a social media stage to rant, rave and reminisce - but, who are we actually talking to?
Social media users create aimed tweets/statuses to that person that's pissed them off instead of just picking up the phone or sending a direct text. Why not? Does it really make you a psycho-bird?

In comparison to other decades, it could be argued dating is now worse. However, social media has paved for new ways of communication and also makes long distance relationships easier. Additionally, opportunities to meet people are so advanced compared to fifty years ago. The LGBT Community has also had large success within the UK and attitudes of generation Y specifically are accepting and understanding.

There is no one to blame for the forgotten ways of courting, the world we live in today is the world we're used to and as much as social media isn't a solution to problems, as long as we are a little less exaggerative and a little more confident, it's still fun to use...

Overall, it's interesting, and a bit scary, to compare the difference of not only dating, but life in general from back then to now. I hope you've learned something from these blogs, as I know I have!
